Grammar school Hladnov and state language school, Ostrava

Hladnov secondary school, Slezská Ostrava, is situated in the city of Ostrava in the northeastern part of the Czech Republic. It is a state school with a long history which dates back to the year 1911.

The school provides a four-year study programme which is focused on English, students have a higher number of English language lessons, including lessons with a native speaker. Students can choose the general four-year study programme as well and since we are the only bilingual secondary school in the Moravian-Silesian region, students can attend a six-year programme in the Spanish language. 

As far as Spanish section is concerned, it delivers a special programme with extra lessons of Spanish language in the first two years and from the third grade onwards students are taught Mathematics, Physics, Geography, History and Chemistry in Spanish. Language teaching is provided by qualified Czech and Spanish teachers. A language school the participants of which have opportunity to pass a state exam exists within our school. It provides many language courses for our students as well as interested people from public.

Our school is attended by more than 500 students who have newly refurbished classrooms, language and specialized labs, cafeteria and dressing lockers at their disposal. A new sports centre including running ovals, a football pitch and beach volleyball courts was opened in 2013. The brand-new educational trail around the school, providing information about local fauna and flora on its boards, has been opened this year.

Students of our school can attend English Drama Club led by our native speaker and have fun while rehearsing plays written by the most well-known playwrights. In their second grade students have opportunity to attend ski course in the Alps. In the third grade they can enjoy the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea during a school visit to Croatia. Every two years a trip to Great Britain is organized and in the meantime, students can participate in many excursions to various European countries.
